Battle Royale Games

Battle Royale games are a natural development of the survival games genre. The name comes from the Japanese film of the same title (and from the multi-competitor match in wrestling), while the gameplay is certainly inspired by the cinema hit The Hunger Games. The main idea in battle royale games is the clash between the players in the arena. They fight until there is only one of them. A single round is played usually by a dozen or several dozens of players at once. The gameplay differs from the classic deathmatch games by the fact that the players start with their bare hands and first they need to get weapons,  ammunition, and armor. The gameplay is shown from the first or third-person perspective.

Battle Royale games usually take place in post-apocalyptic open worlds. Thus the players explore mainly abandoned towns or villages. They can use different types of vehicles to move. The examples could be H1Z1 or Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds.

The first game of the Battle Royale genre was, without a doubt, the fan-made modification of ARMY 2. From the original military simulator, it was transformed into a Battle Royale. The creator of the project, Brendan Greene, is now one of the most respected creators of this type of game.

The popularity of the mod has been the reason why since that day on indie productions of this type started to slowly emerge. Soon, independent commercial titles also began to appear, and the popularity of this genre will undoubtedly bring many new games in the near future. For example the year 2018 will witness the release of such titles as Islands of Nyne: Battle Royale or ARK: Survival of the Fittest.
